Good Morning, Darlings!

This week I sat down with the charming Donald Sargent, Owner of Morelli’s Ice Cream.  Now, if you live in Atlanta, you probably already know about Morelli’s. They are simply the best ice cream in town.  With flavors like Ginger Lavender, Sweet Potato Pie, Chocolate Wasabi and their killer Salted Caramel, Morelli’s stands alone.

With a degree in Hotel Management from FIU in Miami and after starting his hotel career at Miami’s famous Fountainbleu Hotel, Donald realized he was working 80 hours a week and making next to nothing.  Friends working as pharmaceutical sales reps lured him to a new career path when he saw what he could be making.  As luck would have it, after making a great living, he was laid off. Hmmm, what to do next?  A friend told Donald, “do something you love and the money will come.”  And so he made ice cream!  Donald and his beautiful wife Clarissa (nee Morelli), rented a space previously owned by Bruster’s, where they also purchased all the equipment.  Soon, Cliff Bostock of Creative Loafing sang his praises and then Bon Appetit came calling, voting Morelli’s as one of the Top 10 Ice Creams in the country. Most impressive, but not surprising.

Donald told me they use 150 gallons of heavy cream a week. That’s a lotta ice cream, y’all!  I asked for some of the most exotic ice creams they have developed and the list was long, but I have to share some of these flavors with you.  They include:

Maple Bacon Brittle
Coconut Jalapeno
Chocolate Bourbon
Athena’s Feta (with raisins, lemon, chocolate chips)
E. India Kulfi
Feta Basil
Goat Cheese Fig
Sweet Corn
Peanut Butter Curry

And Donald’s personal favorite:  Almond Coconut Joy (doesn’t that sound fab?)

And all kinds of toppings for your ice cream goodies!
